I’ve been a repeat customer of this particular barber because I really enjoyed the way they cut my hair. However, this last interaction I had I found ...deeply concerning. This barber wanted to talk about politics. I attempted to keep the conversation light because I suspected that we had differing views, but the conversation evolved anyway, as I feel like he was egging on the conversation. As an openly gay man, I think it is an incredibly difficult subject whenever my life in a political context is brought up. I want to be able to have the comfort of going into a place of business to get a service such as a haircut done without feeling that my identity or my rights as a citizen are open for discussion. I did participate in this conversation as he was the one who was cutting my hair and I was concerned about end product might look if I did not even participate. Though I did mention several times that we should not talk about this topic. He mentioned several things such as thinking don’t ask don’t tell should be reinstated, and that while he doesn’t have a problem with gay people, he does not want to be in a locker room with one. I want to make it clear that I do not have a problem with having different opinions, but the conversation of how I personally identify makes me feel uncomfortable, not only as a customer, but as an American born citizen. It makes me feel as if my existence is something he is openly telling me is not important.I need to clarify again that this was a haircut, not a debate stage. The fact of the matter is that I did not want to have a political conversation anyway, and one happened that included the topic of how I identify as a hot button issue. At the very least, I find this deeply inappropriate and I will not be returning. Show more
